60's fashion inspiration poll:

Here are the winners, in order: Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, June Cleaver, Aunt Bea, and Doris Day.

It's no wonder that Grace Kelly won. In her day, she was thought to be the epitome of classic beauty.

I'm glad to see that good old Aunt Bea got some votes -- even more than Doris Day!

Now, let's talk about sewing...

Experts say that there's been a huge revival in sewing. All of the blogs devoted to sewing and handiwork or that talk about these subjects in conjunction with other topics would bear that out. But, at the same time, lots of fabric stores are closing and chains are dropping their fabric departments. What's up with that?

Take the poll in my sidebar. Also, feel free to post comments that give us more information. Do you bring in income by sewing, either full time or part time? Do you sew clothing for yourself or family members? Do you sew home decor projects? Are you talented enough to design your own fashions or alter patterns to achieve your own special look? Do you hate sewing? Do you wish you knew how to sew?

Give us the scoop!

Enjoy!

I wanted to tell you that I really appreciated your comments on my blog, and I hafta also share that you are *so right*! I began to learn about Biblical womanhood about ten years ago at a tea, and then the only encouragement I could find along the same vein was online. Of course I have and am still going many stages of it all, but some of my best friends today are still the women from a Titus 2 tea list waaay back when! I thank God for how the internet has helped me to grow in this way, and thankfully today He's given me some wonderful IRL friends who are like-minded. (((((HUGS)))) sandi

My husband and I were disscussing this topic just yeasterday. We were talking about how I had headr that Singer is going out of business and Janome just disscontinued on of their top sellers.

My husband said that there were not many women at home anymore who sewed for theri families and alot of sewing done today is done on industrial machines.

It is such a shame that the art of sewing is not being passed down any more and has becaome a talent of the past.

Well I will do my part to keep the art of sewing alive. My daughters will begin learning to sew this year. And will probably inherit my first sewing machine. (if it last that long)

Now I am off to vote in your poll.

My mom sewed a lot when I was a child (and still does). I don't have her talent, but want to sew more than I do; however, since I don't *have* to sew -- it is more of a pleasurable hobby, since we get so many handmedown clothes for my daughter -- I put other household chores at a higher priority. I'm trying to get the clutter down in my house, baby steps at a time, before I "reward" myself with more sewing time (because I won't be thinking about all the clutter I should be clearing instead).

My mom and my daughter and I took a mom n me sewing class over the last few weeks. We signed up for this class back in Oct of last year. There were just now enough people to fill it. It was one other mother daughter duo.
Im desperatly trying to learn to sew. I want my daughters to know how to sew before they leave the nest as well.

When I was 5 my grandma died and left us a trunk full of fabrics, patterns, old sewing books and a heavy duty basic machine in good working order. I think it is the best gift I have ever been given! By the time I was 11 I was making many of my own clothes - just reading through her books and doing the projects step by step gave me confidence and experience. I love to sew and have saved a lot of money over the years. Fabrics and notions are more expensive now then when I first started sewing, but there are still good quality fabrics to be had reasonably. My favorite sewing tip - NEVER buy cheap thread - it will mess up your machine, break and not hold your garment/ home decor project together for more than a few months. My second favorite tip is to pick simple patterns and sumptuous fabrics - even a basic level seamstress can make a simple pattern look 'designer' if the fabrics are lovely!

Hi all,

Thanks for your kind comments.

Heather, I think I'm learning the hard way that cheap thread ruins the project and the machine.
